About

Q & A

How would you describe your sound?

“I got no idesia” (says Brandon).  Soul electronic.  Experimental soundscapes with pop accessibility.  Groovy urban trance.  Critics have described Idesia as neo-soul, jazz, hip hop, fusion and sophisticated, soulful R&B.

Who are some of Idesia’s musical Influences?

J Dilla, Erykah Badu, James Blake, Robert Glasper, Hiatus Kayiote, Sade, Jill Scott, Amy Winehouse.

What is the story behind the name “Idesia”?

We named the band after Idesia polycarpa, a deciduous roundheaded Asiatic tree widely grown in mild climates as an ornamental for its heart-shaped leaves and fragrant yellow-green flowers followed by hanging clusters of fleshy orange-red berries.  Just kidding, “Idesia” is Sophie’s fancy version of the word “idea.”

What do the band members have in common?

We are all Juniors at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music in downtown Los Angeles.  Sophie is a jazz vocal major.  Colton, Brandon and Daniel are all studying popular music but also have strong backgrounds in jazz
